In Megargel, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in this method, we have centers across all U.S. cities to conduct hair drug or alcohol evaluations. With a requirement of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, these tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug detection, often replacing urine tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests for their increased accuracy. This method, chosen by zero-tolerance employers, legal institutions, and probation services, provides a 90-day drug use window. While hair tests are thorough, urine assessments remain best for recent 5-day usage tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. The long-term history provided by hair arises from its ability to capture biomarkers in its growing strands. A sample taken near the scalp can reflect drug and alcohol usage for up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp usually yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It's beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, body hair in an equivalent amount can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. All other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are classified as body hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the lab processing of drug tests: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample within a lab's system, which involves confirming that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a quick preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening economically eliminates negative results in most cases, any positive detected requires confirmation for it to be legally admissible. Any samples flagged as presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug testing's complexity.

Confirmation for positive screening outcomes employs methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS, with presumptive positive samples washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter detection times of urine tests.
  • Harder to tamper with: The results of a hair drug test are more reliable due to the difficulty in tampering.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a record of drug use spanning a given period, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There's a delay of about 5-7 days before drugs appear in hair.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in growth rate can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the frequent label "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Megargel, TX, hair testing offers superior detection of drug use. It not only identifies substances consumed over a longer span but also provides more accurate insights. Traditional urine tests lack the comprehensive reliability of hair testing, making it a preferred choice for precise drug use identification.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Megargel, TX, benefit from hair follicle testing's extended detection capability. Covering up to 90 days, this method offers detailed substance use history, unlike shorter detection windows of urine tests. This allows businesses to make informed decisions regarding past drug use, highlighting the long-term advantages of hair testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
