Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Memphis, Texas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug assessments over standard urine tests. These tests appeal to employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and those on probation. Hair tests are advantageous for their extended drug detection period, covering up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is hard to falsify. However, urine tests remain more suitable for recent drug use (within 5 days).

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective strategy to discount drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and made ready for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening represents the most intricate methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleaned before verification as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection range: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection range.
  • Challenge to tamper: It is substantially challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are often more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
