Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Metcalf Gap, Texas. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing extends across all cities Nationwide. Typically, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is taken from the crown, or body hair is used. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or fulfill other custom hair testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers leverage hair follicle tests. The test's extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, plus the supervised collection, makes it nearly cheat-proof, though for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the maturing hair shaft, hair offers a chronic timeline of alcohol and other drugs. When near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of nearly 200 hair strands (akin to the breadth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for conducting screenings and confirmations. For EtG, add-ons, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair may be acquired. When we refer to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be permissible in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a specimen is tentatively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Validation of any positive screening finding is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive specimens are cleansed prior to validation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually demand higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
