Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Midfield, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide to conduct exams. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized purposes.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists mandate a hair drug assessment over standard urine tests. This test is preferred by employers endorsing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals. The chief advantage of the hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, conducted in a monitored collection process, making it difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting drug usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unsurpassed in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug ingestion by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analysis beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When referring to head hair, it exclusively means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step includes verifying the secure sealing and proper shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation step.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that presumptively test positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a span of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, making the results more trustworthy.
  • Provides historical data: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to surface in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing procedures.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
