Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Midlothian, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with locations in cities across the nation ready to conduct tests. To complete the test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is generally required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine screens. Hair follicle tests serve zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers due to their extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, and collected under observation, making deception virtually impossible. However, urine tests remain most precise for recent usage, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers within growing hair strands capture biomarkers, offering a historical record of substance use. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can provide detection for alcohol and drugs over a period of roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, and the sample is relatively resistant to tampering and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or for tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair; body hair refers to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing steps crucial to obtaining a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into the laboratory's system. Tasks include verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary, cost-effective method to identify possible substance use across most samples; however, any positive result must undergo confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening undergo secondary confirmation.

Upon obtaining a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to alternatives like urine or saliva, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive result during screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use history up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection limits.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's significantly hard to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: Provides a record of drug use over time, rather than just recent history.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can impact the concentration of drug metabolites detected.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," these evaluations analyze the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.
