In Midway, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. If you require drug or alcohol testing through hair samples, our expertise lies in hair assessments, available at our testing facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Our hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug testing protocols. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer this method over urine testing. Hair tests facilitate employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. They offer extended detection up to 90 days in an observed process, reducing cheating risks. For recent drug use, urine tests still remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, thus offering a long-term record of alcohol and other drug use. When collected near the scalp, it can deliver roughly a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

Collecting a 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is optimal. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" refers to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample's properly sealed and shipped state, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for abuse drugs. It effectively excludes drug usage in most samples at a lower cost, though any positive Screenings require confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples deemed presumptively positive at this stage need a subsequent confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positives from Screening undergo Confirmation via methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples are washed before Confirmation if needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage over up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Limited to older use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are naturally more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Hair color and individual hair growth changes can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," the procedure analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
