In Midway North, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and our centers are available nationwide to perform such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Our hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine exams. Used by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and on probation individuals, hair tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted through a supervised process, making it difficult to manipulate. However, for drug use in the last few days, urine testing remains highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means in identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and other drug usage by holding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers during growth. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection frame for substances and alcohol. Hair is convenient to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, it is advised to gather 150mg of the specimen. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be lacking, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When talking about head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample’s initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out an initial fast assessment for commonly abused drugs. Although it is cost-effective to dismiss drug use on most samples via screening, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that turn out presumptively positive in the screening stage require another confirmation.

If presumption of positivity arises in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and arranged for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other tactics (such as urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the toughest technique to execute.

Validation of any positive screen result is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, falls under the review of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, making results more reliable.
  • Reveals substance use history: Hair drug tests present drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Triumphs - In Midway North, TX, hair follicle testing is preferred for its comprehensive detection capabilities. While traditional urine tests can miss recent drug use, hair analysis offers a broader window, capturing patterns that span several months. This method reinforces drug policy compliance, providing greater accuracy and less susceptibility to circumvention compared to urinary analysis.

Extended Detection Window

An Extended Window into Substance Use - Hair follicle testing reveals a drug usage history extending up to 90 days. In Midway North, TX, this long-range insight is invaluable for employers needing a full view of an individual's substance history. By utilizing hair tests, organizations gain a strategic advantage in maintaining a substance-free workplace, as it shows ongoing usage trends that other tests might overlook.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Securing Reliability through Anti-Tampering Measures, hair follicle tests virtually eliminate the risk of sample alteration, ensuring trustworthy results in Midway North, TX. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
