In Moffat, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our company excels in hair-based tests, with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested and analyzed for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, or through personalized testing services.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular as a testing method. This approach is preferred by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts compared to traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation requirements opt for hair follicle tests, which offer a 90-day detection period and are difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the standard for identifying recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a compelling method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair fiber naturally incorporates biomarkers within the hair strand's structure as it grows, offering a prolonged snapshot of alcohol and drug use. When extracted from near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol intake for a duration of around three months. Its collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair segment measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (akin to the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, offers about 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be insufficient, a comparative quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory cycle of a drug test result includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. Tasks here include confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing data entry not included by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening serves as an initial swift measure for identifying drugs of abuse. While Screening offers an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be verified for court validity. Samples presumed positive in Screening call for additional confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with a presumptive positive status are cleaned before confirmation if required. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorical review and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests prove difficult to falsify, enhancing result precision.
  • Provides usage history: It depicts drug consumption patterns over an interval, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair following approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing can incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth variations may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
