Located in Mooring, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. With nationwide centers, we're experts in both hair and alcohol testing. Generally, hair from the crown or body is needed—1.5 to 2 inches in length. This analysis detects drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom substances.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in drug screening. It is increasingly used by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals as an alternative to urine tests. With a detection window of up to 90 days, hair tests provide a reliable method against tampering, ideal for zero-tolerance policies.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is now recognized as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When the hair is cut close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential stages involved in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was packed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data not captured by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment to detect substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be viable in legal settings. Any samples showing a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. At this point, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies.

Any positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is verified under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can show a drug usage trend across time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Follicle Testing excels over urine tests in Mooring, TX. Hair analysis offers superior detection accuracy and reliability, making it the preferred choice for many employers. Its long detection window captures more comprehensive substance usage history compared to the short timeframe detectable by urine tests.

While urine tests detect recent use, hair tests evaluate extended periods. This advantage is essential for zero-tolerance workplaces, as it covers a broader overview of an individual's drug use patterns.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window is a key feature of hair follicle testing in Mooring, TX. Capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, this method provides a more comprehensive analysis over shorter detection methods like urine tests. Employers benefit by having a clearer picture of an individual's substance use history.

This extended detection period enables employers to thoroughly assess an applicant or employee's suitability, ensuring workplace safety and compliance with drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
