In Moraida, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we're your specialists, available nationwide with centers that conduct hair tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol or offer other customized testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years for conducting drug screenings. Unlike standard urine tests, many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests. These are favored due to a longer drug detection window, making them apt for employers enforcing strict drug policies, court rulings, and probation. While hair tests can detect past drug use up to 90 days, urine tests remain most precise for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Using hair sampled close to the scalp can reveal a detection timeframe of up to about three months for substances. It's easy to collect hair samples, which are relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample consisting of 200 strands, close to 1.5 inches in length (similar to a #2 pencil), gathered near the scalp, will roughly weigh 100mg, which is ideal for initial screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional components or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen’s weight is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, body hair of equivalent mass can be used. "Head hair" refers to scalp hair only, while "body hair" pertains to all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug testing covers four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes its first phase of processing into the lab’s database. Tasks include ensuring the sample’s seal and shipping integrity, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any obligatory manual entries if absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Screening efficiently rules out drug exposure for most samples, yet any positive finding requires confirmation to hold up in court. Presumptively positive samples from Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation stage.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at remarkably low levels compared to other methods (urine or oral fluids, for example), which makes hair drug assays particularly challenging to implement.

Confirmation of any positive findings from Screening is achieved through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are appropriately cleaned. The complete procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is checked according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests trace drug intake for up to 90 days, outlasting urine tests with shorter spans.
  • Minimal risk of manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test proves very difficult, lending to more precise outcomes.
  • Historical consumption patterns: It reflects drug usage over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot report on immediate use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Higher costs: Hair tests commonly cost more compared to alternative testing practices.
  • Variable results: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The often-termed "hair follicle tests" actually examine the hair shaft rather than the scalp-based follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
