For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest assessing the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair should be procured. When we mention head hair, we are referring exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Verification.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This phase verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, designates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not obtained through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that yield presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample yields a presumptively positive outcome during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirming any positive results from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
