Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Morgan Mill, Texas. If you're in need of either a hair drug or alcohol test, our focus on hair testing ensures you expert service, with testing locations available in all cities across the nation, including those capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from your scalp or body, which can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method for drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse authorities now opt for a hair drug test over a typical urine test. Hair follicle drug testing is favored by employers with stringent no-drug-use policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers. The key advantage of this testing is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making it nearly impervious to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the previous five days, urine tests still rank as the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs. Testing hair close to the scalp can reveal substance use over a span of up to three months. Hair samples are straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, amounts to around 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. It is important to note that head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within the lab’s system, which includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for detecting drugs. While it serves as an economical approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screening outcome must be confirmed to hold in legal contexts. Samples that yield a presumptively positive result require subsequent confirmation.

In cases of positive screening results, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. In this procedure, the drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most complex approach to execute.

Confirmation of any screening positives is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. For all presumptive positive samples, washing is performed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair approval and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption over a 90-day span, in contrast to the brief detection window of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating in a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Insight into past behavior: It unveils a history of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: In general, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While typically called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
