In Morgans Point Resort, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. When you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, look to Accredited Drug Testing. We specialize in hair analysis, and with nationwide centers in every city, we provide ready access to hair testing services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from either the head or body for analysis. Hair testing can be tailored to screen for substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method of detection. Courts, employers, and substance abuse professionals are now opting for hair tests rather than urine tests. This approach supports zero-tolerance policies by extending detection timelines for drug use up to 90 days. Conducted under observation, the hair test's accuracy is virtually unbeatable and it's nearly insusceptible to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are still considered the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, comprising around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the prime quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair denote scalp hair exclusively. Body hair indicates all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workup of a drug test outcome involves four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's framework. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for drug abuse. While Screening allows for a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, any positive screening must be validated to be court-admissible. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening need secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are pulled from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before Confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenges in manipulation: It's exceedingly difficult to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug intake over a span, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks ability to detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternate testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand without examining the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
