Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Morton, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialization lies in hair tests, and we operate testing facilities nationwide in all cities capable of conducting these tests. Generally, hair of 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or even body can be used. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle exams. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation utilize hair follicle screenings. The main advantage is an extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, requiring an observed collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, for drug use under 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair acts as a repository for a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers in the hair strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month window of detection for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's preferable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When we discuss head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This procedure ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the main specimen for the Extraction process. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for approximately 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter window.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical information: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time instead of only highlighting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing testing methods in Morton, TX, hair follicle screening stands superior to urine tests. The extended detection period allows for an in-depth assessment of substance use, increasing the accuracy of results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
