In Nesbitt, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Our facilities across the nation, including those in every city, offer specialized hair and alcohol testing services. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options to suit specific needs.

Over recent years, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has risen. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are choosing hair tests over traditional urine analysis. The key advantage is the extended detection span of up to 90 days, and the observed procedure makes it extremely difficult to tamper with the results. Nevertheless, for detecting very recent drug use, the urine test remains superior for up to the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has proven to be an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing markers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. In terms of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial process of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. It involves verifying correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples indicating a positive result in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a potential positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a limited timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage trends: It can indicate a history of drug consumption over time, rather than recent intake alone.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand, not the actual hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Nesbitt, TX, hair follicle testing emerges as a superior choice over conventional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses offer enhanced detection precision and are less susceptible to evasion attempts. Companies advocating for drug-free environments find hair testing more trustworthy.

The non-intrusive collection process further favors hair tests, preventing potential manipulation commonly associated with urine sampling. This reliability is vital for law-compliant organizations.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
