Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Neuville, Texas. For those requiring drug or alcohol analysis via hair, our expertise in hair testing is utilized across our nationwide centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair assessments are designed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized needs.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has grown over the years. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists favor hair tests over the standard urine analysis. Employers with stringent anti-drug policies, courts, and probationers benefit as hair tests offer up to 90 days of drug detection, with minimal risk of manipulation, though urine tests remain precise for recent usage detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When sampled proximate to the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month observation period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair solely. "Body hair" includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps for processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of integrating a sample into a lab's system, which entails verifying the sample’s seal and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While this is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court acceptability. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, substances are removed from hair at a concentration significantly lower than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation operates under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for as many as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection interval.
  • Immunity to cheating: Altering a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers usage patterns: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Neuville, TX, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests due to its advanced detection capabilities. While urine tests might catch recent drug use, hair testing covers a more extended period, up to 90 days. This breadth offers a holistic view of an individual's substance use, making hair testing superior in scope and detailed accuracy.

The reliability of hair tests in Neuville means fewer false negatives compared to urine tests. This method proves beneficial for employers and legal entities aiming for precise monitoring without the common challenges found in urine sampling, like sample dilution or substitution. Advanced detection and minimal tampering risks further solidify hair testing's advantages in the region.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Neuville, TX are favored for their extended detection capability, identifying substance use for up to 90 days. This enables employers to have a detailed understanding of an applicant or employee's past drug use, providing a full picture of their history. Such extended reach surpasses the shorter windows provided by other test types, adding significant value.

The expansive window of view offered by hair tests allows Neuville employers to make informed decisions. With the ability to trace back months, it provides a more comprehensive assessment that can reflect ongoing patterns rather than a one-off usage. This insight is crucial for maintaining a workplace optimal for productivity and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Neuville, TX, hair follicle tests are renowned for their tamper-resistant properties. The testing method dramatically reduces the risk of adulteration, ensuring near-impossible chances to alter the specimen. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
