Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout New Taiton, Texas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our facilities nationwide are equipped to handle these tests. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches, either from the scalp or body, is required for testing. We offer tests for a range of substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly used alongside other methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over standard urine exams. This test is ideal for zero-tolerance policies and probation checks, with the advantage of a longer detection window—up to 90 days. It's difficult to manipulate due to supervised collection, though urine tests remain preferred for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It can reveal a comprehensive history by encasing biomarkers in the hair's fibers as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about three months for various substances. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hairs (approximate thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, additional testing, or when tests exceed 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By scalp hair, we specifically mean the hair on the head. Body hair refers to other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a laboratory typically includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where the sample is processed and entered into the lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any required data input not automatically handled by electronic systems.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances. It efficiently rules out drug usage for most samples, yet any positive screen result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptive positive results in Screening need further verification.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair with more precision than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid tests), making hair testing more complex.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive screen results. Samples are washed as necessary before being confirmed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to standards set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directives and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter range.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair test is quite challenging, which increases the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It shows a trend of drug usage over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests often incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variances like hair color and growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
