Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Newark, Texas. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, we are experts in hair analysis, offering centers across the Nation for such tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various needs.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in assessments. It's being adopted by numerous employers, the legal system, and Substance Abuse experts as a better alternative to the traditional urine test. These tests benefit employers with strict no-drug policies and those on probation. Their main advantage is their ability to detect drug use over a longer period, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is tough to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain accurate for recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting substance use involving drugs and alcohol. Hair strands capture long-lasting drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber. A sample from near the scalp provides around a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. This method is easy to perform, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A collection of a 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) offers an optimal sample size of 100mg for testing and verification. For EtG tests, additional analyses, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a sample amount of 150mg is preferable. It's advisable to use a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement. If head hair is insufficient, body hair can be used as an alternative. In context, head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in processing a drug test in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is recorded into the laboratory's database. It involves ensuring the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for substance use. Although a cost-effective means of identifying drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires further verification for legal acceptance. Presumptively positive samples demand follow-up confirmation.

Should Screening indicate potential positivity, additional hair from the original sample is processed for Extraction. This stage extracts substances from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or saliva testing), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screens.

Verification of positive Screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo cleansing before confirmation. The process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review for adherence to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Tracks usage over time: Offers a comprehensive view of drug consumption over time, instead of only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: These tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug assessment techniques.
  • Potential result variations: Drug metabolite levels can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
