Providing thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Newburg, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol screenings. We have test centers across all cities Nationwide to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is necessary. Our hair tests evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other tailored testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair testing over urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug policies, court systems, and probationary oversight organizations due to its extensive drug use detection window—up to 90 days. Additionally, the testing is observed and difficult to falsify. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal extended information on alcohol and other substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is ideal. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is entered into the lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening provides a quick preliminary check for drugs. Though Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. All samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need a second confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives at the Screening stage, additional hair is sourced from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a meticulous technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is tough to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It shows a pattern of drug consumption over time, and not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
