Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Nome, Texas. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our centers specialize in hair testing, and offer services in cities nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair either from your head or body. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

In recent times, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer these to traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, legal entities, and those on probation use hair tests. They offer a 90-day detection period, observed collection process, and are difficult to manipulate. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly three-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a sample within the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most intricate method to administer.

Any positive result from screening undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples deemed presumptively positive are washed prior to Confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Hair drug testing is challenging to deceive, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides information on drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
