In Noonday, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug monitoring. Whether it’s for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, boasting testing centers nationwide, ready to perform the necessary tests. Typically, hair from the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, suffices for analysis. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more commonplace. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer this method over the usual urine testing. With zero-tolerance policies, many have turned to hair tests, favored for the 90-day drug detection span and observation during sample collection, making it tamper-proof. However, for recent use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for the identification of narcotic and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a documented history of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within its growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and tests extending beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair only, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry that might be absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse substances. Even though Screening offers a budget-friendly way to rule out drug use for most specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court admissible. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In case a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive in the Screening process is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the ability to identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty to deceive a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: Detecting drugs using hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
