In North Cleveland, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is supported by numerous centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is used for testing. Hair tests are effective in analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in drug testing methodologies. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer it over traditional urine tests. This testing method serves organizations with zero-tolerance policies and individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observed conditions, making it difficult to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair illustrates a prolonged chronicle of alcohol and drug involvement by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can present up to an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will supply 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional items, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s balance. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be acquired. When discussing head hair, we are specifically mentioning scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of primary steps involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This encompasses verifying that the specimen was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage on the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in court. Any specimens that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positively screened result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests which possess a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, rendering the outcomes more precise.
  • Offers historical insight: It can provide a pattern of drug use over time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers superior detection and accuracy compared to standard urine tests in North Cleveland, TX. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis spans a longer detection period, capturing a broader history of drug use. This ensures that employers receive a thorough understanding of an individual's substance consumption patterns.

Traditional urine tests might miss recent or consistent usage, but hair testing covers a timeframe that urine cannot match. This prolonged scope makes hair testing invaluable for stringent policies enforcing zero-tolerance at workplaces.

Extended Detection Window

In North Cleveland, TX, the extended detection period is a prime advantage of hair follicle testing. With the capability to detect drug usage for up to 90 days, employers gain valuable insights into an individual's substance use over time. This comprehensive view informs better hiring and personnel management decisions.

Unlike other testing methods, hair tests capture drug use that would otherwise go unnoticed. This extended window ensures that both occasional and habitual usage are documented, providing a detailed substance use profile.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in North Cleveland, TX, provide a tamper-resistant testing method, minimizing the potential for sample adulteration. This reliability stems from the observed collection process and biological characteristics of hair samples, which are less prone to manipulation.

The risk of altering or falsifying results is significantly reduced with hair testing. The robust nature of the testing method ensures that outcomes are consistent and credible, even under close scrutiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
