In North Randall, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing centers across the nation. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. This method can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various tailored testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing, increasingly used over recent years, is often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals due to its longer detection period of up to 90 days compared to urine tests. This test is collected under direct observation, making deception almost impossible. For very recent drug use (within 5 days), urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. The strands of hair can provide a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within their fibers. When collected from the scalp, these samples can reveal up to a nearly 3-month detection span for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the specimen. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a proportionate amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory workflow is comprised of four central stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes its initial integration into the lab's system. This stage involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transported appropriately, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase provides a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, any positive screening result must be verified before it can be considered admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

With a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any samples with presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage insight: It provides insights into a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually come at a higher cost compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
