Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in North San Pedro, Texas. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we are experts in hair testing, with centers available across various cities Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be tested. Hair assessments can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine analysis. Hair follicle testing serves employers with strict drug policies, judges, and probationers. The main advantage is detecting drug use for up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it almost cheat-proof. Yet, urine tests remain most precise for drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a detailed timeline of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers in the fibers of a growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol usage within an approximate 90-day period. Hair is easy to obtain, not easily adulterated, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, involving the integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not provide.

Screening includes a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening efficiently eliminates drug usage in most samples, a positive Screening result requires confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples with preliminary positive results necessitate further confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The benefits of hair follicle testing over urine testing are abundant in North San Pedro, TX. Hair tests offer a longer detection period, identifying drug use over several months, compared to urine tests which capture only recent use. This superior accuracy aids employers more effectively.

Furthermore, hair tests are less prone to tampering, ensuring more reliable results. They are difficult to cheat, unlike urine tests, which can be adulterated. This ensures compliance and policy enforcement in workplaces effectively.

Extended Detection Window

In North San Pedro, TX, hair follicle testing excels with its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This offers employers a detailed look at an individual’s substance use history, which urine tests can miss due to their limited scope.

This lengthy analysis period helps employers assess an applicant or employee’s long-term behavior with confidence, enhancing decision-making processes and ensuring workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in North San Pedro, TX, drastically cut down on the chance of sample adulteration. Their design makes it very challenging to alter or tamper, ultimately providing reliable and unquestionable findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
