Located in O'Brien, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether your need involves detecting drugs or alcohol through hair sampling, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair near your scalp or from the body can be used. We analyze hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing requirements.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred technique for drug detection. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over the traditional urine method. Such tests appeal to employers with strict anti-drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals under probation. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, captured through an observed process, rendering misconduct nearly impossible. Yet, recent drug use within 5 days is more precisely detected using urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can potentially offer an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The four key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing into the lab's system. This process includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen result requires confirmation to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive during Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), accounting for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests have the capability to trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is significantly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
