Complete hair follicle drug testing services are provided by Accredited Drug Testing in O'Donnell, Texas. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we have centers nationwide, including every city, to assist with your needs. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair tests offer options for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified individual assessments.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance detection. Employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists increasingly favor hair tests over standard urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers use these tests because they reveal drug use over longer periods—up to 90 days—and are collected under supervision, making tampering unlikely. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives long-term details of alcohol and drug intake by securing biomarkers within its fibers during growth. When extracted near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, with about 200 hairs (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. The use of a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is recommended. In situations where scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. The term head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in the lab includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample gets processed into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment were intact, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entries absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive indication needs further validation to be legally admissible. Samples with alleged positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase retrieves drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the challenge of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample with presumptive positivity undergoes washing before any required affirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the criteria of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: This method reveals drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the metabolite concentration of drugs in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the focus is on analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
