In Oak Ridge, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. For those seeking drug or alcohol hair tests, we specialize in this method with nationwide centers capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Our hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle analysis. Employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse professionals often mandate hair tests instead of conventional urine tests. Hair analysis appeals to those enforcing no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation cases. The main advantage is its extended drug detection window, usually up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, minimizing cheating. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands capture biomarkers within the hair’s growing fibers, offering an extended history of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, this method can unveil drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, or approximately 200 hairs (roughly a #2 pencil’s width), yields 100mg, ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional panels, or tests over 10 panels, a recommended 150mg is necessary. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If head hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. Head hair implies scalp hair only, whereas body hair covers all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test result in the lab involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where a sample enters the lab’s system. This step includes verifying the integrity and proper shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing data entry absent in any digital chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial brief assessment for substance abuse. While Screening efficiently eliminates drug presence in most cases, positive findings require confirmation for legal validity. Any sample appearing positive during Screening mandates additional confirmation.

Should the Screening stage yield a presumptive positive, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are derived from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair screening particularly challenging.

Any initial positive result is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if needed. Each lab phase, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Slim chance of manipulation: The accuracy is enhanced as it’s tough to deceive a hair test.
  • Chronological insight: It delivers usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher cost: These tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis zeroes in on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
