Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Odem, Texas. If hair or alcohol testing is required, we specialize in such testing nationwide with centers in every city capable of executing a hair test. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more regular method for drug screening. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are choosing hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers favor these tests. The key advantage is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, achieved through observed collection, making cheating nearly impossible. When testing for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a robust approach for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a detailed timeline of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When referencing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of lab handling for drug test analysis encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial inclusion of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This entails verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. All samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

In instances where a sample yields a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes undergo a washing procedure prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine assays are limited by a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug testing is significantly harder to manipulate, leading to increased accuracy in test outcomes.
  • Provides trends: Hair tests can showcase a trajectory of drug utilization over time, rather than solely indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
