Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Onalaska, Texas. For those requiring a test for drugs or alcohol, our company excels in hair testing with centers in every city nationwide. Typically, hair samples need to be 1.5 to 2 inches long from the head or body. Services include drug, alcohol/ETG, or customized analyses.

Recently, the prominence of the hair follicle drug test has increased in drug screening practices. More entities like employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse counselors are mandating it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by entities with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and those supervising individuals on probation, due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days and the challenge it poses for tampering. Yet, for detecting substance use within the past five days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, resistance to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial handling of a sample in the laboratory's system. This process confirms the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample exhibits presumptive positivity in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical patterns: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Testing in Onalaska, TX
Comparing against the conventional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior accuracy and reliability. Urine tests may falter in detection beyond a few days, but hair testing provides a comprehensive timeline of an individual's drug use, reaching back as far as 90 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
