Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Orange Grove, Texas. For hair or alcohol testing needs, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing with centers in all cities nationwide able to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the crown of the head or body for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized hair test options.

There has been an increase in the application of hair follicle drug tests for drug detection over recent years. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation programs rely on hair follicle tests for their long detection period, of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for the past five days of drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp gives 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Referring to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes other hair types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system, which encompasses verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample is considered presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration lower than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most advanced method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage pattern: It delivers a timeline of drug use over months rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and unique hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite level in the hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
