In Orla, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive services for hair follicle drug tests. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our company is proficient in conducting hair tests, and our testing centers across the country are equipped to perform this service. Hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body are generally required. These hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become increasingly common in drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine ones. Organizations with zero-tolerance drugs policies, judicial systems, and probation services use these tests for their longer detection period of up to 90 days and for their highly reliable nature. Despite this, urine tests remain the best method for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair shaft. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of about 200 strands near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. Scalp hair is implied when referring to head hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Four key stages in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary swift examination for drug abuse. Although cost-effective, Screening alone isn’t sufficient for court use; positive screenings need confirmation. Any Screening-positive samples require further verification.

If a positive result arises in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction, whereby drugs are extracted from hair at a lesser concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

A positive Screening outcome necessitates confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are washed before confirmation is undertaken. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which detect for a shorter period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reflects drug usage patterns over time and not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp
