Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Palmer, Texas. If you require a drug or alcohol test via hair analysis, we excel in this area and provide services across nationwide centers, capable of performing hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Our hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing variants.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance professionals are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug policies and the court system. They benefit from a 90-day detection window, are conducted under observation for accuracy, and are difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug intake. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal usage within a timeframe of up to approximately three months. Collection is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and can be transported with ease.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other forms like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's database. This process involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any residual data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be validated to be legally accepted. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for further processing in Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer than the window for urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug testing is notably hard to counterfeit, which enhances the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Provides trend data: This testing can indicate a history of drug use over a time span, as opposed to merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs typically become traceable in hair about 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug traces in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Palmer, TX, hair follicle testing proves to be superior to traditional urine testing due to its extended detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, which generally identify substances over a short-term period, hair follicle tests reveal drug use histories up to 90 days. This advantage offers a more complete picture of an individual’s substance use, crucial for industries with strict drug-free commitments.

The unparalleled detection accuracy of hair follicle testing provides reliable data that urine tests cannot match. Hair tests eliminate the risk of inconclusive or misleading results, often associated with urine tests. This reliability is critical for employers seeking trustworthy results to ensure safety and compliance with zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Palmer, TX, offers a significantly extended window for detecting drug use, reaching up to 90 days. This long-term view enables employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of an applicant or employee's substance use habits. In comparison, traditional testing methods fall short with much shorter detection periods.

The extended detection period of hair follicle tests is invaluable for employers and agencies enforcing drug-free environments. By providing a detailed assessment of substance use over a prolonged period, these tests ensure businesses maintain safe and compliant workplaces. Consequently, companies can make informed hiring and employee management decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Palmer, TX, offers a tamper-resistant solution to drug testing, significantly reducing the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are difficult to manipulate or substitute, ensuring reliable outcomes that accurately represent the individual's substance use history.

The resistance of hair follicle tests to tampering provides organizations in Palmer with peace of mind when conducting drug screenings. The faithful results, unobstructed by sample manipulation, ensure compliance with policies and aid in maintaining a completely secure and drug-free environment. This reliability reinforces the method’s reputation as one of the most trustworthy drug testing techniques available.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
