Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Perry, Texas. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

The approach to drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle drug testing in recent years. Hair drug tests are now mandated by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as an alternative to standard urine tests. They're preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and probationers. Hair follicle tests have the advantage of a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, use an observed collection process, and are extremely difficult to tamper with. That said, for detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair offers a comprehensive overview of alcohol and drug use over an extended period. When taken near the scalp, hair testing can reveal substance use history for a duration of up to three months. Hair is easy to gather, less prone to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil), obtained from the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, supplemental tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to measure the hair specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, a comparable amount of body hair may be used instead. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial stage, where the sample is incorporated into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample is adequately sealed and dispatched, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, a preliminary assessment for drug abuse is conducted. While this is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug presence in most samples, any positive screening result must undergo confirmation before being legally valid. Samples showing potential positive results at this stage necessitate additional verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the existing sample for further processing in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at relatively lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid testing, which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating positive results are subjected to washing before confirmation, if necessary. Every step, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is meticulously reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for durations reaching 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Circumventing a hair drug test is considerably challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Illustrates usage trend: This method can map out a trajectory of drug use over extended periods, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unsuitable for detecting recent usage: A 5-7 day period is needed before drugs become traceable within the hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing alternatives, hair tests generally incur higher costs.
  • Variability in results: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle found beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
