Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pierce, Texas. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we excel in hair testing and offer facilities nationwide, including every city, capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the head or body. These assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular method for substance testing. A growing number of employers, judiciary systems, and addiction specialists are favoring hair tests over standard urine analysis. Hair follicle evaluations are favored by strict employers, judges, and probation officers due to longer detection windows (up to 90 days), supervised collection, and are remarkably hard to tamper with. Urine tests, however, remain more definitive for recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

The evaluation of hair has emerged as a robust mechanism for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair holds a prolonged record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the structural strands of hair as it grows. If captured nearest to the scalp, hair can reveal evidence of alcohol and drugs within an estimated three-month timeframe. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is optimal for both primary screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It is advisable to verify the specimen weight using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is scarce, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. When head hair is mentioned, it specifically refers to scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Steps Involved

The core phases in processing a drug test outcome in a laboratory comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's workflow. This involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening is a prompt preliminary assessment for the presence of illicit substances. Although Screening is a budget-conscious approach to dismiss drug usage in many samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally permissible. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up validation.

Should a sample register a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All presumption-positive samples undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Merits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to falsification: Hair drug testing is notably difficult to manipulate, ensuring a higher degree of result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It furnishes a temporal pattern of substance consumption, extending beyond merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to show recent intake: Detectable drug levels in hair typically emerge after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically have higher costs than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," these assessments actually evaluate the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
