Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Pilot Point, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for both hair drug and alcohol tests. With specialized expertise and a nationwide network of testing centers, we perform hair tests using body or head hair between 1.5 to 2 inches. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional methods. It's increasingly chosen by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation services, prefer hair testing due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected with direct observation, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of substance use by holding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug usage for up to roughly a 3-month period. It’s easy to collect hair, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the head provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for an accurate weight. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the drug testing laboratory process are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. It includes confirming the proper sealing and dispatch of the sample, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening constitutes a basic examination for drug misuse. While it provides a cost-effective means to dismiss drug use in most cases, any positive screen requires confirmation for court validity. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a Screening result is presumptively positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this step, substances are extracted from hair in much smaller concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Verification of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples should be washed before confirmation, as required. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficulty in falsification: It’s nearly impossible to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides a timeline of use: It traces drug usage patterns over time, beyond merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other screening methods.
  • Result variation: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
