Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Pipe Creek, Texas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have centers nationwide to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, but body hair is also often acceptable. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over urine tests. These tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, the legal system, and probation cases due to a 90-day detection window, making them reliable and hard to tamper with. Still, urine remains best for detecting recent substance use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use, including drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a record of substance use, capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers an extensive detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, it's not easy to tamper with, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil size) from the scalp, will produce 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional requests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not attainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample in the laboratory system, encompassing the assurance that the sample is properly sealed and transported, the assignment of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any supplementary data recording not done by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary analysis for substance abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient method for negating drug use in the majority of samples, positive results from Screening must be verified for them to be legally valid. Samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is done using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleaned prior to Confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the accreditation of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Attempts to deceive a hair drug test are exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical usage data: It presents a timeline of substance use, not confined to recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pipe Creek, TX, hair follicle testing is favored over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities. The enhanced accuracy of hair tests provides a more comprehensive insight into an individual's substance use history, enabling more informed decisions.
Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window, hair tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, offering a more extensive overview.

This extended detection window is a crucial advantage over urine tests, which typically only detect substances used within a few days. Employers prefer hair testing as it aligns with their zero-tolerance policies, ensuring a drug-free workplace. The detailed results further enhance trust in the testing process.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, a considerable advantage for employers in Pipe Creek, TX. This extensive timeframe allows for reliable insight into an individual's substance use history, aiding better hiring decisions.
Comprehensive evaluation of drug habits ensures that employers maintain a safe and compliant work environment while reducing potential risks.

This extended window proves invaluable for maintaining long-term safety and security in the workplace. Employers gain a more accurate understanding of potential hires or current employees, reinforcing the commitment to a safe and productive work environment. The prolonged detection duration is unparalleled in traditional testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
