Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Point Blank, Texas. When a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis. We have sites nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is often required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a more prevalent method for drug detection. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer them over standard urinalysis. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently utilize hair follicle drug tests due to their ability to detect drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, and their immunity to tampering. For drug use within the past 5 days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair samples are easy to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation stages. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By “head hair”, we specifically mean scalp hair. “Body hair” encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample when it enters a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for potential drug abuse. It's a cost-effective means to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening require confirmation in secondary testing.

Should a sample display presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening ranks as the most challenging method to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening results is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before Confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window of detection.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Chronological data: These tests can indicate drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally come at a higher cost compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing the benefits of hair testing to urine testing in Point Blank, TX, hair follicle tests emerge as the superior choice. The reliability and accuracy of hair testing surpass traditional methods. Employers seeking longer detection periods turn to hair testing to ensure better accuracy.

Unlike urine tests, which capture recent use, hair tests provide a broader scope, showcasing their strength in identifying historical substance use over extended periods.

Extended Detection Window

With hair follicle testing in Point Blank, TX, the ability to observe drug use over a 90-day span gives unique insights. This extended window uncovers comprehensive substance history beyond what short-term tests show.

Employers benefit from this detailed perspective, making informed decisions based on a broader understanding of an applicant's past substance usage. It's an essential tool for maintaining workplace integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Point Blank, TX, trusts hair follicle testing for its tamper-resistant qualities. The nature of hair collection minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring accuracy and trust in results.

Where other methods might be susceptible to manipulation, hair tests provide peace of mind through their inherent reliability. Results are transparent and largely unquestionable, making them an ideal choice for employers and others looking to ensure integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
