Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Point Venture, Texas. For those seeking hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair evaluations, with facilities available across all cities Nationwide to perform such testing. Typically, hair measurements of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or other body areas are required. Hair testing assesses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method over traditional urine testing. This trend is seen among employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals. These individuals and entities seek hair testing for its zero-tolerance capabilities, especially for those on probation. A key advantage is the extensive detection period up to 90 days, conducted under strict observation, making it highly tamper-proof. Yet, for detecting recent drug use, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been regarded as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Due to its ability to trap biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a historical perspective on alcohol and other drug use. Hair sampled near the scalp can provide a detection span of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to fake, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or panels over 10, a sample size of 150mg is recommended. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is advised. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair only, while body hair implies all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody solution.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, an affirmative screen must be confirmed for legal purposes. Any samples deemed presumptively positive require further confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples at the Screening stage, an additional hair sample is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as applicable. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is meticulously reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to outsmart a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides chronological data: It can demonstrate a drug use pattern across a timeline, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require around 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
