In Prairie Hill, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, they have centers nationwide equipped to conduct such testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed either from the head or the body. Hair testing can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly utilized hair follicle analysis. Many employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts now prefer this over traditional urine tests. Suitable for employers with no-tolerance policies, courts, or those on probation, hair tests provide a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under direct observation, and are difficult to manipulate. For recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term history by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period extending to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil), close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for analysis and confirmation. When testing for EtG, additional screenings, or beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. Here, head hair solely refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of samples into a lab’s framework. It verifies proper sealing and shipping of the samples, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although it is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, court admissibility requires positive screens to undergo confirmation. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and readied for Extraction, where substances are retrieved at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening notably complex.

Confirmation of positive screens is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation of ISO/IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests are limited to shorter periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's highly challenging to manipulate hair drug test results, ensuring increased accuracy.
  • Pattern identification: Hair tests can reveal a history of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Delay in detection: Drugs typically need 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
