Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Prosper, Texas. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol using a hair sample, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field, with facilities across all U.S. cities ready to provide these services. Typically, having about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts is sufficient. Tests can evaluate for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice in drug testing approaches. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to entities with strict anti-drug policies, like employers, judges, and probation officers. A key advantage is their ability to detect drug usage over longer periods, up to 90 days, through a supervised collection process, making results highly reliable. Nonetheless, for detecting drugs used within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

For the detection of alcohol and drug use, hair testing has emerged as an effective tool. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. If collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal alcohol and drug usage over an approximately 3-month period. Hair is relatively easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hairs (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For assessments involving EtG, additional tests, and test panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to use 150mg of specimen. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning step involves entering a sample into a laboratory’s system initially. This process includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening step performs an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed for them to be considered valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid testing), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used for confirming any positive screening outcomes. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are washed as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation receives oversight based on the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which detect for a shorter window.
  • Difficulty in tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Drugs are typically detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests," the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
