In Purley, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. With specialization in hair and alcohol tests, our centers spread across all U.S. cities are equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the crown or body. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analysis needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a favored method for many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over conventional urine tests. Entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judicial system, and probation officials rely on hair testing. Its key advantage lies in its extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with ensured observation during collection, making deception nearly impossible. For recent drug use within 5 days, however, urine testing remains the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When extracted near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and uncomplicated to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches with around 200 hairs (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar volume of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory workflow of processing drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s framework. This process checks if the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any data ommissions absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal proceedings. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower density compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening being one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screen result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in alignment with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can show drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is quite challenging to dupe a hair drug test, providing more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical insight: It reflects a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually concentrates on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
