In Putnam, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses. If you require a hair or alcohol screening, we are experts in this area and have facilities across cities in the U.S. able to carry out these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair are needed. Such tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

The hair follicle test has gained prominence in recent times for drug screening. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer it over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance, judicial bodies, and probation monitoring use it widely. Its key advantage is a much longer detection window—up to 90 days, with supervised collection, minimizing cheating risks. Nonetheless, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine remains unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipments are handled with ease.

An ideal sample for testing involves a 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. 'Head hair' specifically means scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory stages for processing drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample upon entering a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input not captured through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, quick method for identifying substances of abuse. While it serves as a cost-efficient strategy to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening require an additional confirmation step.

When a sample potentially tests positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drug compounds are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing procedures.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a washing process before confirmation, if necessary. The complete procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is rigorously reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a less extended detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage trends: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Detectability in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Costs: Hair tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
