Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Queen City, Texas. Our expertise in hair testing extends across the nation with facilities ready to conduct hair and alcohol examinations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is necessary for sampling. Testing options are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable needs.

Recently, many drug testing protocols have incorporated hair follicle analysis over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers due to its extended detection period. A hair follicle test can highlight drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a virtually foolproof collection process. For identifying recent drug use within five days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance and alcohol history by encasing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe for substances and alcohol of up to around three months. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a laboratory drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves registering a sample in a lab’s database initially. This involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and transport, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data required outside of an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is the preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Screening serves as a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug consumption across most samples; however, confirming a positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples that are preliminarily positive via Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a preliminary positive is obtained during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves drug removal from hair at concentrations much lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging technique to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed for confirming any positive screening outcome. All preliminarily positive samples undergo necessary washes before confirmation. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair testing can identify drug consumption for a duration reaching 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer timeframe.
  • Cheating difficulty: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Delivers historical data: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over a period, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It takes close to 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing methods, hair drug tests are usually costlier.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
