Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Ranchitos Las Lomas, Texas. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and offer testing centers nationwide, capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside custom options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in drug screening methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers due to its extensive drug detection period of up to 90 days, precise observation during collection, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become acknowledged as an effective mechanism for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug activity by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When acquired close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs stretching up to about three months. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hairs (approximately equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This process ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening serves as a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug usage across the majority of samples, any positive screen must be validated to be permissible in legal settings. Samples that exhibit presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen and made ready for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out of hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral secretions), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples exhibiting presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a considerably shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to manipulate, resulting in more precise findings.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It reveals trends of drug use across an extended period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not identify recent consumption: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
