In Rancho Chico, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our nation-wide centers, including every city, are capable of performing these tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers custom testing solutions.

The usage of hair follicle drug tests has become more widespread among employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts instead of the usual urine tests. These tests are preferred for zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation measures due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain preferred for identifying very recent drug use, typically within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair provides an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to alter, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is recommended. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. For head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. All other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.) are classified as body hair.

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system, which includes checking if the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court validity. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples identified as presumptive positives are cleaned as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests of shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Shows usage history: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect new usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand itself, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
