Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Redfield, Texas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing, along with nationwide centers, ensures we can accommodate your needs. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are typically necessary. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing protocols. This method is often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. It is utilized by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected through observed procedures, which makes it extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for uncovering both drug and alcohol consumption. This technique offers an extended insight into substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When clipped near the scalp, hair samples can reveal a drug and alcohol history of approximately 3 months. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and facilitates easy shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in size to #2 pencil lead) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for testing and validation. For EtG, extended tests, or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring it using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. In this context, head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure at the lab for generating a drug test outcome comprises four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial reception of a sample into the lab’s database. It involves verifying the proper sealing and transport of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for ruling out drug use in many samples, results deemed positive in this initial stage must be further validated for legal purposes. Any samples testing positive during Screening undergo an additional confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, a further portion of hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. This step involves removing drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before Confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the oversight of CAP's (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage up to 90 days, while urine analyses have a shorter window.
  • Resilient to falsification: The difficulty in evading a hair drug test heightens the accuracy of the results.
  • Reveals usage trends: It illustrates patterns of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth influence the levels of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
