Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Redwood, TX. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing, and we operate facilities in every major US city ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair screenings can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing procedures increasingly include hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services prefer these tests. The chief advantage is the extended drug detection period, which can be up to 90 days, collected with careful observation, and almost impossible to falsify. However, for drug use detection within the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a proficient means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken close to the head, hair offers up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps involved in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial incorporation of a specimen into the laboratory system. This entails ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal purposes. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug tests notably complex to administer.

Positive Screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standardization and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to forge a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Tracks usage history: It offers a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become noticeable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outperforms Urine Testing in Redwood, TX is evident. Hair tests enjoy a superior detection accuracy over traditional urine tests. By yielding highly reliable results, these tests provide peace of mind for employers seeking certainty in their screening processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
