Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair drug testing services in Reid Hope King, Texas. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers are spread nationwide for your convenience. Generally, hair length on the crown or body should be 1.5 to 2 inches to conduct the test. We offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has risen recently, replacing traditional urine tests among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. They prioritize these tests for zero-tolerance policies and probation cases due to their lengthy detection capability of up to 90 days. The collection process is supervised, making it almost impossible to tamper. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage. When sourced close to the scalp, it can present a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section, approximately 200 strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair—the optimal sample for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a rapid initial assessment for drug use. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a screened positive must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where Screening yields a presumptive positive, the original specimen is used to extract more hair for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method.

Confirmation of any positive screened result is achieved through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washes before the confirmation process, as necessary. The lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating is notably difficult with hair drug tests, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides historical data: Offers an account of drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
