Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Richards, Texas. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers available nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer it over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals utilize these tests. Hair tests offer a longer detection period—up to 90 days—and almost eliminate cheating, although urine tests remain accurate for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. Collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A strand sample of about 1.5 inches comprising 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the head provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advised to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically address scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This entails confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid evaluation for the presence of drugs. While Screening offers an economical approach to ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be valid in a court of law. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can signal drug use for up to 90 days compared to urine tests, which possess a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is immensely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Presents historical data: Can illustrate a drug use trend over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detectable drug levels in hair take about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Results variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While popularly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment itself pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
