Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rio Vista, Texas. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with testing centers located nationwide for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. These hair tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals are often opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. These hair tests are preferred by entities maintaining strict no-drug policies and for individuals under legal supervision. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for drug use, lasting up to 90 days, collected through direct supervision, and extremely difficult to falsify. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for spotting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a longitudinal record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately three-month period for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it only refers to scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial handling of a sample in the laboratory’s system. This involves checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although it is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified for court acceptance. Any samples that test positive during Screening require follow-up confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels than in other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most complex to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as positive undergo a washing phase before confirmation, if necessary. The laboratory's complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, improving the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage trends: Offers a timeline of drug consumption, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot immediate use: Drugs can take about 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
